When you envision a beach holiday you probably don’t throw Africa into the list of destinations often but you should! With so much coastline along the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, you will kick yourself for not thinking of African beaches sooner.
Seychelles
Seychelles is usually on the list of where to find the best beaches in the world but some people may not realise that it is located off the coast of West Africa. This archipelago of 115 islands is home to giant tortoises, sparkling white sandy beaches and stunningly clear topaz water.
Grand Bassam
Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, Grand Bassam in Côte d’Ivoire was once the nation’s capital. This stretch of Atlantic coastline is lined with palm trees and is a bustling resort town with great examples of French colonial architecture and beautiful African beaches.
Lake Tanganyika
Lake Tanganyika in Tanzania is a more remote destination for anyone wanting to get away from it all. Despite being a freshwater lake, it is more like a coastal getaway but with the possibility of encountering a hippo or crocodile taking a dip as well.
Bazaruto Island
The island of Bazaruto off Mozambique is ideal for snorkelling and diving enthusiasts. Covered in sand dunes, it is part of a marine park in the Indian Ocean where you can see dugong, turtles and even a sailfish.
